Modular System

Istanbul KENT University English Preparatory Program (KEPP) implements a modular system consisting of 4 levels, each lasting at least 7 weeks: A1, A2, B1 and B2. The curriculum of each level follows an integrated approach to teaching language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). At levels A1 and A2, students learn general English and at the following levels (B1 and B2) they begin to focus on academic English.

Measurement and evaluation systems are used in coordination with our education system, with a "process" based approach. According to this system, students are evaluated during the module through a midterm exam, portfolio, and online assignments. Students must receive 50 points from the in-module assessments to be able to take the MET (Final Module Exam) exam.
The students' final score is created by combining the in-module assessment grades (50%) and the MET (50%) grade. Students must receive at least 60 points to advance to the next level in the program. Students who fail to fulfill the attendance requirement repeat the level with the same books.

Level Information

A1 Level

If the student has no or very little knowledge of English, they are placed in the first level. The aim of this level is to teach students how to use vocabulary and grammar and to develop their ability to understand what they read and hear. In addition, they also lay the foundations for paragraph writing and speaking skills. First, they need to read a book appropriate to their level and actively participate in lessons. To successfully complete level one, students are expected to use new vocabulary meaningfully and prepare a summary to develop their presentation skills and present it in class. Various assessments are applied throughout the module, including a mid-term exam.

A2 Level

Level A2 is designed to enable students to develop their basic language skills and achieve a general level of English proficiency leading to level B1. We aim to develop students' language skills, vocabulary and grammar. By the end of the module, they will have learned how to identify the main idea/gist and understand specific information in listening and reading texts at their level and in various genres. They will also demonstrate that they have mastered the grammar and vocabulary appropriate to their level in creating a coherent and coherent paragraph and in performing speaking and oral presentation tasks that require the use of level-specific strategies and organizational skills.

B1 Level

At this level, students begin learning academic English. B1 level education aims to help students acquire the skills of listening and taking notes, writing articles, reading and understanding an academic text, and actively participating in discussions that they will use in their academic lives. At this level, they receive education that will enable them to actively use the internet and library resources, access and read academic articles, and conduct research.

B2 Level

At B2 level, students are expected to build on what they have learned at previous levels and develop new academic skills. In listening, they practice developing note-taking skills, especially by listening to longer and more academic lectures, and continue to practice listening to specific information with exercises during listening. In writing, they continue to work on the structure of the essay. The difference is that students are expected to write longer essays, appear more academic, and use level-appropriate structures and vocabulary elements to create more complex sentences. They are expected to write essays based on well-developed ideas and arguments. Furthermore, they begin to provide evidence from reliable sources by paraphrasing or summarizing sections of given essays. In reading lessons, students are asked to guess meaning from context and are not allowed to use a dictionary. They apply the basic reading strategies they have learned earlier by reading longer and more complex texts. This is the level at which they begin to make inferences, reflect on arguments in the text and support their ideas with evidence from academic sources. In order to achieve the speaking objectives, students are provided with listening and reading texts so that they can reflect on the texts, find evidence to support their own point of view and refute opposing ideas. In general, we want students at B2 level to use more varied and complex structures and to provide evidence from reliable sources to support their views.
